Water heater advice

Water heater relief-valve pipe dripping? Do not block it.

The temperature-and-pressure relief valve is a safety device. Water from its discharge pipe is a symptom to investigate, not a reason to plug the pipe.

What the relief valve does

The temperature-and-pressure (T&P) relief valve helps limit unsafe temperature or pressure in a storage water heater by releasing water through its discharge pipe. That pipe needs to remain unobstructed. Never cap, plug, or put a valve in the discharge line.

Why water may come from the pipe

Intermittent dripping can be related to pressure or thermal expansion in the plumbing system. A large discharge of hot water can point to a temperature problem. Water can also appear around the valve connection itself. These situations have different causes; a plumber needs to identify which one is happening before recommending a fix.

Do not touch the discharge water or pipe; it may be hot. Do not operate the valve as a test or attempt to replace it yourself. If hot water is flowing heavily, keep people away and seek professional help promptly.

When to get help

Tell the plumbing company where water appears: from the end of the discharge pipe, around the valve threads, or somewhere above it. Mention whether the water is a slow drip or a larger release. A company can inspect the unit and explain the cause, repair options, and price.
